Cloud computing refers to the delivery of various services (think databases, networking, software, and data storage) through the internet. It is useful for businesses because cloud computing can offer cost savings as well as improve security, speed, performance, and efficiency. Rather than relying on an in-house hard drive or storage system, any device with access to the internet can retrieve necessary software and stored data from anywhere and at any time.
Cloud computing is not a simple piece of technology, but rather a system comprised of three main components: platform-as-a-service (PaaS), system-as-a-service (SaaS), and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). SaaS refers to licensing a software application (for example, Microsoft 365), and IaaS would be more of a delivery system that can provide everything from operating systems to storage options on demand (such as IBM Cloud). The most complex of the three is PaaS, providing an option for creating software that can then be delivered through the Internet.
